Review of Holy Diver by Dio by Zach Silva

Release Date: July 6, 1983

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Sadly, Ronnie James Dio, one of the greatest lead singers of all time, passed away earlier this week. His work in Rainbow, Black Sabbath after Ozzy left, and his solo work has been and will be a tremendous influence on rock groups and any other genre that considers itself an offshoot of the rock genre. Not only did the album go platinum in the ’80s, but tracks from the “classic metal staple,” as Allmusic describes the album, also grace the Guitar Hero games.

Holy Diver is Dio’s best album. It is one of the essential albums to own for any rock enthusiast. Throughout the album, Dio flaunts his vocal perfection, transferring his emotions to the listener through his god-like voice alone. “Holy Diver” is an incredible song. Dio’s masterful vocals and rough, mighty riffs combine to create a song that rocks hard. “Rainbow in the Dark” is another noteworthy track on here, where synthesizer adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise metal song. Final tracks that I will mention are “Caught in the Middle” and “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” which are metal ballads of sorts. They show how diverse and well-rounded Holy Diver truly is, displaying how Dio can range from all-out metal to an acoustic rock ballad within one album. This album is one of only few that accomplish that feat.

For years, Dio has inspired musicians in many genres, especially rock and metal, where his famed devil horn hand gesture has been used for decades. He has become a household name when discussing rock legends, and has been mentioned by artists such as Metallica and Megadeth as having influenced their careers. Heck, even Tenacious D dedicated a song to the rock legend, who also cameo-ed in their film “The Pick of Destiny.”

I will leave you with inspiring words from the legend from the track “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “Don’t hide in doorways/you may find the key that opens up your soul.” Remember to keep those horns up.
