Ribbon Cutting at the Pawling Public Library

February 19, 2012
By

On Thursday February 9th the Pawling Library held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated library Annex. This building, nicknamed the “Yellow House” is used for meetings, classes, and programs. Renovations included opening up the first floor to give the library additional space and to take advantage of natural lighting.  “One of the biggest challenges for me as the director is to find space, not just for everyday use, but also for our very popular programming. I am very proud of the changes we made, and the fact that we found alternative ways for paying for it,” said Scott Jarzombek, Library Director.

The second floor, which is used as office space and storage now, has a door which should help with heating costs and to secure library files and equipment.  “Just like the community we serve,” said Mr. Jarzombek, “we are learning to do more with less. I believe the library does need to expand, but for right now I am doing my best to give more room within our current footprint.’’

The project was funded in part by the Christmas book sale, a grant received from Allstate Insurance, money donated by the Pawling Rotary, and generous donations from the public. The library is very proud to have used local businesses in the project, including Dutcher Ave Builders and Kenny’s Carpets. So far the public reaction has been very positive.

“The space has always been very small and dark. When our winter session opened, parents came into the room and were stunned by the improvement,” said Children’s Program Coordinator Karen DeGenarro, “The new layout makes setting up and using the space for programs so much easier. The larger space and the addition of natural light makes for a really awesome program room. We all love it!”
