Most people like ice cream. I. Love. Ice. Cream. If You Like Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlors…..Then You’ll Wanna Go To Heinchon’s Old Farmhouse & Ice Cream Parlor On Rte 22 In Pawling. It will surely delight you with old fashioned country charm and great ice cream.
The Heinchon Dairy was started by Daniel Heinchon in 1923 in Pawling, NY. Deliveries were made on foot and by horse and wagon. In 1940, the dairy was moved to where it is today on East Main Street. The family still also operates the Heinchon’s Old Farmhouse & Ice Cream Parlor on Route 22.
Heinchon’s is now open for the summer. People drive from miles around for their delicious homemade ice cream. The parlor is housed in an old farmhouse with a back deck looking out over rows of corn and hills. You can order up homemade milkshakes, ice cream cones, and sundaes topped with homemade hot fudge and butterscotch. The prices are very reasonable and the happy staff are more than generous with their scoops.
I recently went there and enjoyed an all-natural, homemade hard black raspberry ice-cream. You can get a mud pie (coffee with fudge and oreos), Peach Melba, and the non-green version of mint chocolate chip. They also have sugar-free, fat-free yogurts like butter pecan and 98% fat-free yogurt in white chocolate almond, which can be served in one of their freshly made waffle cones. There are specialty drinks, among them, egg creams and the fruit frappe (lemon sorbet blended with fresh cut strawberries and seltzer). There are brownie sundaes consisting of a homemade brownie, a scoop of ice-cream, with the white chocolate almond yogurt; drizzled with hot fudge; and topped off with a heap of homemade whipped cream and a sprinkling of walnuts.
The atmosphere at Henchion’s is laid back and relaxing. Any small line moves quickly and smiles abound. You can sit comfortably inside the old farmhouse or out on the back deck, overlooking the endless farm fields and crops. Either way, it’s a throw back to yesteryear. The feeling is good and the ice cream is great. Do stop by and recapture a little of the way it used to be.
