Patti Rothberg Performing Friday Night at the Town Crier

August 23, 2012

OVERNIGHT SENSATION… is the title of the new Patti Rothberg recording; cleverly tongue in cheek for an artist whose recording career goes back to 1996, with her debut on EMI Records, Between the 1 and the 9. Reunited for the first time with Between the 1 and the 9 producer, Dave Greenberg, their work Overnight Sensation is a pop powerhouse.

The title of her debut record refers to the time she spent performing inNew York   City’s subway system. The title track refers to some of her experiences there, when EMI executive discovered Patti performing in the14th Streetsubway station. Seemingly overnight, Patti Rothberg achieved the kind of worldwide success one could only dream of. Critically acclaimed, Between the 1 and the 9 was an instant hit, and remains a timeless classic. It was Rothberg’s beautifully emotive voice, and brilliant songwriting (and awesome guitar solos) coupled with Greenberg’s melodic pop sensibility and production, that were the backbone of this magical recording.

The success of Between the 1 and the 9 had Patti touring quite non-stop from 1996 through 1997, and into 1998. She toured theUSAsupporting the Wallflowers, Chris Isaak, Midnight Oil, and Garbage, and she touredEuropesupporting the Black Crowes. Patti and her band performed on Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

While Patti promoted the record on the road, the song “Inside” reached #25 on Billboard inAmerica, while inEurope, the song “Treat Me Like Dirt” went all the way to #1. A cover of “Kung Fu Fighting” was featured in the 1997 release of Beverly Hills Ninja, and her song “Forgive Me” was featured in the 1998 film The Misadventures of Margaret.

Taking some time from the road, Patti followed her success with the release of Candelabra Cadabra (Cropduster 2002) and Double Standards (Megaforce 2008). This was an intense writing period for Patti, and she found herself working with vocalist Andre Blacksugar, contributing songs and vocals to his Black Sugar Transmission record titled Use It, released in 2009.

Now, her latest recording brings what fans from around the world have waited for, Patti Rothberg and Dave Greenberg together again. The product of their reunion is ‘Overnight Sensation’. Patti has poured her melodic and lyrical spin over Dave’s pop and dance tracks creating something distinctively unique. The record is rounded out with some newly penned songs in Patti’s classic rock signature style. The process was very natural and they found their original chemistry intact. They even brought in Adrian Harpham, the drummer who performed on Between the 1 and the 9. Vocally, Patti channels Teri Nunn (Berlin), Rhianna, Stevie Nicks, Olivia Newton-John, Juliana Hatfield, and even 70’s disco era Mick Jagger. The Pretenders, Beatles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Velvet Underground are all given a wink and a nod. Their work has been mastered by the legendary Herb Powers Jr. (Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Justin Timberlake).

Whatever your musical passion, the uniquely diverse blend of songs from Overnight Sensation hold together even in “shuffle mode”. You have songs like “Make It Real”, a song that will move any club dance floor. Then you have songs like “Let It Slide”, more singer-songwriter story telling that is pure Patti Rothberg, reminiscent of the undeniably infectious melodies and intelligent lyrics that first put Patti on the charts in 1996.
