County Players continues its 55th season with Marvin’s Room on Friday, November 2 at 8:00 p.m. In his critically acclaimed and hilariously offbeat play, Scott McPherson takes an original look at the irrepressible nature of the human spirit in the face of death. His heroine, Bessie, has her hands full watching after her disabled aunt and trying to keep her bedridden father, Marvin, from swallowing Yahtzee dice. Bessie just wants to make their last few years as comfortable as possible. But when she is diagnosed with leukemia, it is Bessie who will have to learn to depend on others – namely, her long-estranged sister and the arsonist nephew she may have to rely on for a possible bone marrow transplant. At once uproariously comical, emotionally charged, and insightful, Marvin’s Room is stunning recognition of how life does indeed go on.
Bill Peckham directs this comedy drama. The cast includes Frank Alfano, Jeffery Battersby, Susan Brook, Andrew Guido, Zsuzsa Manna, Matt McNamara, Stacey Mesler, Bernadette Pikul, Douglas Woolley and Julie Eads Woolley.
Director Peckham is thrilled to be working with such a talented cast and crew. Peckham states, “Marvin’s Room is one of the most unique plays I’ve ever work on. Despite the fact that three of the characters have life threatening problems, the play is more about family and how they respond to it. The action turns on a dime – very funny at times, yet sensitive and poignant at others. I’m fortunate to have a great cast and crew dedicated to work on this show.”
