Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the Pawling Elementary School Multipurpose Room; and on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the Akin Library and Natural History Museum. Come experience this suspenseful tale of dark magic and cruel ambition, performed by 29 drama students in Grades K-8.
The ACEkids! Theatre Program, run by Pawling Community Services and hosted by the Pawling Central School District, is now in its third year. Amy Emke, formerly the director of Kids Up Front, started the program to give young children an early introduction to the wonderful works of Shakespeare and to give students a solid foundation in acting technique. Starting in October, the students attended weekly after-school classes which culminate in a full-scale Shakespearean production in the spring. Several students in the “MacBeth” cast have participated in the program every year since it began.
This year, the program has been fortunate to have the support of some venerable local organizations. Members of the Pawling Shakespeare Club (114 years young this year) came to talk to the cast about the historical context of “Macbeth”. The club president Marie DeLorenzo, Carol-Lee Kantor, and Rita Shaffer worked with the students on understanding the status of women, class differences, the castles in Scotland that are mentioned in the play, and the types of clothing and armor the characters wore. The Quaker Hill Country Club, which has its own summer children’s theater program that has been going strong for over forty years, is lending sound equipment to the production. And finally, Pawling Public Radio has invited the cast to perform some Shakespeare on the air.
“Macbeth” is directed by Amy Emke, assistant-directed by Julia Whitworth, and stage-managed by Rebecca Meyers. Christina Shaw designed the poster and Aaron Emke provided photography, sound and original music for this production. The cast includes Molly Wolff, Tiana Rose Mohammed, Charles Shaw, Laura Kuhlmann, Noah Emke, Filomena Gentile, Tessa Barry, Charlotte Kershaw, Samantha Attzs- Martinez, Farrell Hoffman, Jesse DeHuff, Hannah McCoy, Ayana Butler, Kelly Cochran, Meret Kelsey, Rachel Munning, Emily Barrett, Abagail
