Friends- Front Street Gallery was founded in 2010 with four equal partners. Pretty soon, that number will be down to just one. The reasons are mainly financial. No one really expected to make a lot of money, but the timing was particularly bad regarding the economy and what people have to spend on art. I am not writing to tell you the gallery is closing, rather to say that I am committed to finding a way to keep it open. But I may need help. Are you an artist who would be interested in joining a coop gallery for a reasonable fee? or more simply, renting wall-space? Do you have other ideas for using an attractive storefront gallery space next to a cafe and across the Metro North, 85 minutes from the city? We’ve had some great shows and impressive sales, but the biggest impact the gallery has made, for me and most of the people who walk in the door, has been in bringing people together. The real place Front Street has found in Patterson and Pawling is in community. This has been a sort of epiphany to me–the satisfaction of creating a space where people share ideas, art, [...]

Dear Friends, After 23 years on Route 22 in Pawling, we are closing our doors after the end of February. Our lease expired and the building is on the market. Despite a string of recent sellouts, it’s time for us to move forward. The good news: We’re exploring the possibility of relocating to a new and better location, and we hope to make an announcement in the near future. Until the end of February, we’ll continue to operate as we always have. We have some great shows scheduled, plus open mics every Wednesday and Thursday. After that, until we’re in our new location, we hope to present concerts at a variety of other venues, celebrating 40 years of The Towne Crier Cafe in the Hudson Valley. What I want to express most, though, is my enormous gratitude to all of you for your ongoing support over the years, and for having made the Towne Crier the cultural landmark it has become. Many careers have been launched here. Bands have formed here. Couples have met here, married and had children—and grandchildren. Some of you have been regulars since we opened in 1972, and I think of you as family. Again, I [...]

The Dyson Foundation will expedite review of all storm-related applications so that needed funds will be made available to impacted nonprofits and residents as soon as possible.
Due to popular demand, the deadline to order inscribed bricks for the Pawling Green has been extended, to February 14, 2011. If you missed the chance to buy a brick as a Christmas present, now you can give one as a Valentine’s Day gift. When you declare your love with a message on a brick, it’s permanent! The Pawling Community Foundation can now offer certificates documenting your brick order – just the thing to tuck inside a Valentine card. The Pawling Community Foundation decided to extend sales because orders for bricks did not stop after the original deadline of December 31. So far, over 400 bricks have been sold. Most of the 300+ bricks ordered by individuals celebrate friends and family, pets, special places in Pawling and favorite mottos. About 60 bricks honoring specific veterans will be placed in the Veterans’ park, and approximately 50 businesses have purchased bricks that will be incorporated into a plaza in front of the Chamber of Commerce building. All sorts of imaginative inscriptions have been ordered. Sheriff Butch Anderson used his brick to state: “treat people the way you want to be treated.” Groups honored include the mothers and fathers of Pawling, volunteers, and [...]

Good Things in Small Packages…The Dutch Oven Have you ever wondered where your next really good meal was coming from? Well, walk into the small storefront at 9 East Main Street, where Paul Rabin prepares his gourmet delights, and that question will be answered!! Dutch Oven, opened in March of 2009, and has been providing extraordinary “foods to take away” ever since. Paul, the master chef/proprietor, has food prep in his genes, having learned his skillful cookery at the knee of his Aunt Pauline, the greatest cook, in his opinion. Food was always important in Paul’s family, so even though his formal education includes a degree in broadcasting from CW Post on Long Island, he returned to his cooking roots, holding positions in several restaurants before building a career as a private chef specializing in preparing delicious meals for those with special dietary needs. His talents would “let them feel unrestricted” in meal choices, taste, and quality, and he counted several celebrities among his clientele, including Tony Randall. Paul can prepare fabulous meals that are gluten free, vegan, and sugar free. He can accommodate any food allergy, and is particularly creative with vegetarian dishes. His menus at Dutch Oven are [...]

Good Things in Small Packages When Adrienne Velardi opened her clothing boutique seven and a half years ago, she was motivated by the desire to bring some of her favorite design houses within easy reach of the women in her favorite town, and that’s when Magnolia’s, on Charles Coleman Boulevard, became a reality. Named for her father’s favorite tree (branches will bend but never break), Magnolia’s stocks items that Adrienne loves from such American names as CMC Click, Habitat and Moon Light and the French Canadian brands of Tribal and Flax. As I stood in the middle of Adrienne’s little, well appointed shop, I overheard one customer gush about how much she and her friend “love this store!” It’s so easy to see why. You simply can’t find the things that Magnolia’s carries in a department store. The clothing is made of natural fabrics…wool, cotton, linen, and silk, yet ninety five percent of everything sold is easy care…actually washable. Colors range from delicious jewel tones to beautifully subtle heathers, and clothing for every occasion is sold here, from casual to formal. The fit and drape are exceptional. Handmade sweaters showcased here can only be described as yummy. Thick wools are [...]

For more than 25 years, the Sunshine School children have been taking the train from Pawling to nearby towns as part of a unit on transportation. Two years ago, we learned of the Center of Compassion in Dover Plains. It is run by the local churches and provides a food pantry and thrift shop for the community. Because this is the season of giving, we talked to the children about how some families have less than they need to cook a holiday dinner and that if we collect food for them, we will help them enjoy the holiday. We divide the food we collect between the Center of Compassion and the Pawling Resource Center, because Sunshine children come predominately from Pawling and the Wingdale/Dover Plains area. Now in November, we combine the lesson on transportation with the lesson on giving and sharing. We take the train to Dover Plains and deliver the food we collected to the Center of Compassion food pantry, sing some songs for the volunteers and patrons there, have a snack and then ride the train back to Pawling. The children are very proud to actually put the food their families sent in on the shelves and [...]
