The award-winning, multi-arts organization, Mill Street Loft, has formed a partnership with Mizzentop Day School to offer year-round, visual arts classes in Pawling on the Mizzentop campus. Registration is now open on the Mill Street Loft website or through Mizzentop and classes will begin in late September.
For 33 years, Mill Street Loft (MSL) has built their reputation by changing lives through the arts. Based in Poughkeepsie, MSL offers year-round art instruction and produces the popular Dutchess Arts Camp each summer in Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Red Hook and Millbrook. MSL teaching artists are professional, working artists, experienced in instruction for students of all ages.
“We will be developing arts programs in Pawling for all ages, including adults,” said Pat Sexton, Program Director at Mill Street Loft. “Discovery, experimentation and enjoyment are at the heart of everything we do,” she adds. Plans are to start with classes for elementary and middle school children and add high school and adult classes soon after. Classes will include explorations of various media through painting, drawing, collage and design. Students will have fun while building skills, learning self-expression and freeing their creativity. Classes will take place in two six-week sessions from September to mid-December.
Mizzentop Day School approached Mill Street Loft to bring their unique style of teaching to the Pawling area. “It’s never too early to show children the importance of art in their lives and we look forward to this partnership with Mill Street Loft. We believe this is a great opportunity for the youth of Pawling and the surrounding communities,” said Laura Kang, Mizzentop’s new Head of School.
Mizzentop’s mission of instilling a love of life-long learning is key to this partnership and a larger community connection to the arts.
“Mizzentop has invited us to the Pawling area and we are so happy to be interacting with a new community and developing valuable arts programming here, “ said Carole Wolf, Executive Director of Mill Street Loft. “We start with young students, make a commitment and see them through to their goals,” she added. High school students of the Art Institute at Mill Street Loft, a pre-college, portfolio development program for career minded teens, have enjoyed a variety of opportunities through the years, including participation in student art exhibits, cultural exchange programs and creating award-winning art for major competitions, such as the regional and national Scholastic Art Awards. “Our students have consistently performed well and have been offered substantial scholarships when applying to top art and design colleges,” added Wolf. Since 2000, over $36 million dollars in merit-based college scholarships have been offered to Mill Street Loft students.
