When you speak to Mary Gray, owner and founder of Circle of Music, her private music school for children, you see her eyes sparkle as she discusses all that she accomplishes with her budding musicians.
Circle of Music was founded by Mary when she and her husband moved to Pawling five years ago, he to accept a position as Chair of the science department at Trinity Pawling. At first, Mary had a studio space in the village near the Quick Stop, but grew out of that, and is now in a wonderful and flexible space in the red barn, renovated for her needs, just out of town on Old Route 55.
Mary has been involved in music all her life. She studied violin and piano in college and spent much time teaching music in public schools. As her family grew, she moved onto teaching in private schools and giving private lessons because this arrangement gave her time to attend to her own children’s needs.
Mary teaches music to 35 of our community’s children, ranging in age from the very youngest, in kindergarten, through to high school. She has offered group piano lessons to the youngest, concentrating on rhythms, movement and song, creating a fun and social environment in which little people learn to enjoy the musical process. Private piano lessons usually begin when children reach age seven, in second grade. She also offers lessons on violin. No matter the age of the student, Mary strives to make music study a joyous experience.
Her recitals take place in Fall and Winter at her well equipped studio, which houses four digital pianos with 88 weighted keys (upstairs) and several computers on which students learn music theory through a well regarded music education web site to which Mary subscribes. Her spring recital takes place at Trinity Pawling.
Clearly, Mary loves and promotes the arts recognizing all the life-long benefits that education in the arts imparts to all children, and teaches music education along with playing instruction. Her students study composers and musical style and genre. Her program is well rounded and she brings years of teaching experience and expertise to each lesson.
Ten of Mary’s students will perform at PPR’s Voices of Pawling Awards on November 17th, and all of us at PPR are looking forward to hearing the result of their study. Come join us for this community wide event!
