Pawling’s newest eatery has a sleek, retro, mid century modern vibe, with clean lines and lots of mouth watering menu choices. Petite is the creation of Chef Lucas Muhlenweg, whose two year journey to open a restaurant that offers his unique brand of casual dining in the Pawling community that he loves, has finally come to fruition.
Sometime this week, some lucky patron will consume the 1,000th crepe since Petite opened three weeks ago (that’s one of the delicious and unusual menu items offered at Petite) and this number is indicative of how busy and successful this latest venture is.
Currently, Petite is open every weekday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekends Petite opens at 8 a.m. Starting next week, however, the hours will be extended to 5 p.m. By November, though, Chef Lucas is planning to offer dinner service on Friday and Saturday evenings. Although reservations are not being taken at the moment, this may very well change as Petite expands its hours and menu choices.
When Chef Lucas talks about cooking, his eyes begin to twinkle. Clearly, this man loves what he does. He tells me that although his technique is French, he uses his talent and expertise in a very personal way, applying these skills to a varied, casual and creative menu. He feels proud to be able to utilize his culinary ability in ways that satisfy every palate.
Crepes are a highlighted menu choice at Petite, but by no means the only choice. The creativity in crafting them, however, allows Lucas to feel like he’s “cooking for friends and family,” using only the freshest ingredients in everything he prepares. He talks excitedly about offering a “tasting menu” when he expands into the dinner hour and would love to include “theme tastings” as part of his offerings. Clearly a creative thinker as well as a creative cook!
Lucas is committed to keeping his prices reasonable and his menu diverse and interesting. His expansive personality is welcoming to all and he would love his patrons to feel appreciated and at home, so bring your morning paper and enjoy his outdoor bistro tables while the sunshine still warms, with a cup of delicious coffee (which he is happy to point out he purchases from Pawling’s own Pawling Trading Company).
If you haven’t stopped by Petite yet, you owe it to yourself to do so. Reading the menu is definitely a mouth watering experience. If your dietary needs require gluten free, then you will be happily accommodated. Petite’s crepes come in sweet and savory, but the menu extends way beyond this, so come in and read for yourself... see what makes your mouth water!
