Vinny’s Deli & Pasta is pretty much a landmark in Pawling, celebrating 26 years in the same location at 14 East Main Street. It is the place to go to for the real deal Italian deli experience. Vinny’s draws customers from all over the Lower Hudson and Harlem Valleys who come for the homemade delicacies, amazing variety, ambiance, and great customer service.
But what makes Vinny’s so special and inviting is Vinny himself! He is the consummate people person, and extends his welcoming personality to anyone who walks through his door. He considers his customers to be his extended family and there is nothing and no one more important to this man, than family!
Vinny was born in the Naples area on a traditional farm with rolling hills and sheep. He immigrated to the United States in 1966 (when he was six years old) and settled with his family in The Bronx. Coming from a tradition of hard work, his first job was as a shoe shine boy. Having “grown up on Arthur Avenue”, he developed a real ‘taste’ for working with food!
When his Dad died in 1969, the family moved to Brewster and his older brother opened a deli in Carmel. It was in Brewster, 25 years ago this September, that Vinny married the love of his life, Tricia. In 1988, his brother Vito, (another nice guy, by the way) who owned two buildings in Pawling, offered Vinny space for his own deli, and the rest, as they say, is Pawling history!
Vinny’s business, like his life in general, is a family affair. The business has four to eight employees that include his sister, his 91 year old mom (when she is feeling up to working), brother Vito, daughters Leah, Sam, and Nicole, and of course, Tricia.
Between the catering portion of the business, the store, the fresh hand-made mozzarella (amazing) that he markets, and the fabulous marinara sauce that he produces with Daryll Hall, it is hard to imagine that there is any free time in this man’s life. While Tricia manages to eke out the time to volunteer at the Community Resource Center, Vinny, who rarely has a free moment, contributes to everything in our community. He donates unstintingly!
And…in those rare hours when he actually takes some time for himself, he can be found relaxing on the golf course. Even here however, Vinny, in collaboration with his ‘great’ partners, has invented glasses for golfers that help them to keep their focus on the ball. The glasses are called “Eyeloc” and can be found on eyeloc.com and have also been featured on the Golf Channel!
What is most impressive, however, is that he admits that “very little bothers him.” He is simply “enthusiastic about life.” Nevertheless, it was his parting words that most impressed. They were a very simple and heartfelt thought about his mom. He said how much he admires her and how much he wants to follow in her footsteps.
How could you not love this guy?
