The Sherman Chamber Ensemble is pleased to announce a new concert series featuring “The Best of Baroque,” to debut with a performance on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 4:00 PM at Christ Church on Quaker Hill in Pawling. Works scheduled to be performed are Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, Vivaldi’s Piccolo Concerto, Corelli’s Christmas Concerto and a Handel Trio Sonata. Performers will include SCE co-founders Eliot Bailen (cello) and Susan Rotholz (flute), Kenneth Cooper (harpsichord), Jill Levy, Michael Roth and Mineko Yajoma (violin) Sarah Adams (viola) and Peter Weitzner (bass).
“The Baroque repertoire is beloved by many concertgoers and musicians,” says SCE Artistic Director Eliot Bailen, “and it has long been my wish to develop a program devoted to this wonderful music. I am especially pleased that we are able to launch this exciting new venture in collaboration with Christ Church and in the Pawling community.”
Over the past few years, Mr. Bailen and the Sherman Chamber Ensemble have been increasingly active in Pawling, most notably through Mr. Bailen’s work with the schools. He has conducted songwriting workshops based on curricular reading at the middle school and is working with elementary school faculty to develop a project called “Making Sense of Math through Music.” In partnership with the school district, SCE has run a songwriting and musical theater camp for young people the past three summers. The Ensemble has performed several benefit house concerts at homes in Pawling and has appeared on the Pawling Concert Series.
Tickets for the concert, which is open to the general public, are $25 per person ($20 for students and seniors). The same program will be repeated at St. Andrew’s Church in Kent, CT on Sunday, January 8th at 3:00 PM, presented as part of the church’s extensive Music in the Nave series.
