It’s been 30 years since cellist Eliot Bailen and flutist Susan Rotholz presented their first Sherman Chamber Ensemble concert at the Sherman Playhouse, and we are throwing a party! Join us for a free community picnic and concert on Saturday, June 30th from 11 AM to 2 PM, on the Town Green in the center ofSherman. Hot dogs and ice cream sundaes will be provided by SCE to celebrate the occasion. Bring your blankets and beach chairs and drop by anytime between 11 AM and 2 PM to enjoy music, food and friends,Shermanstyle! Rain date is Sunday, July 1st.
Musical selections will showcase some of the many styles for which the Ensemble has become known, from classical to traditional, bluegrass and contemporary pop and rock. We’ll be welcoming back many of the audience favorites who have performed with the Ensemble over the years, including violinist and champion fiddler Paul Woodiel and local favorites Bill Petkanas and Missy Alexander, Don Lowe and Bob O’Connor. The Bailen family will be represented by SCE co-founders Eliot Bailen and Susan Rotholz, along with their musically talented children David, Daniel and Julia.
No Sherman Chamber Ensemble celebration would be complete without a few numbers from Song to Symphony, including the favorites “Route 37 and Route 39” and the IGA song. We invite all current and pastShermanSchoolstudents to gather at noon for a reprise of some of the songs created in 10 years of full and “mini” Song to Symphony programs. Lyric sheets and free SCE T-shirts will be provided for all!
Picnic-goers are urged to work up an appetite by taking part in Naromi Land Trust’s annual canoe and kayak event at the GreatSwampin Pawling, starting at 8:00 AM and finishing up just in time to head back to Shermanfor hot dogs and ice cream sundaes at the SCE picnic. More information is available at www.naromi.org.
Admission to the family picnic is free, thanks to the support of the Connecticut Office of the Arts, underwriting from a generous individual donor and assistance from local merchants.
