In the Shade is a series of personal observations by Thomas D. Kersting, who shares a certain measured perspective out of the glare of direct sunlight, filtered by his point of view. Looking at life through the clarity of a polarized lens, In the Shade explores a wide range of topics including personal narrative, memoir and memory, Irish history and culture, as well as commentaries on travel, nature, reading, writing, and curious aspects of language. Having taught English for forty years, Thomas D. Kersting retired in 2010. He now leads writing workshops on Cape Cod and at Arts on the Lake in Kent Lakes, N.Y. He is writing a memoir about growing up in The Bronx in the 1950s and ‘60s and is working on a historical novel set in Ireland during the Great Famine of the 1840s.
