Good radio plays hard-to-get around our hilly Harlem Valley. Some places have just one or two spots around the house that can get a signal from a favored station. Quite a few pockets get no radio at all!
I wrote a couple of years ago that most every radio station in the world was streaming their signal on the internet, but that’s all even better now.
Now it is essentially every radio station that is streaming on the ‘net – including our own Pawling Public Radio (www.PawlingPublicRadio.org) – and the ways and means to receive “internet radio” have multiplied and become much easier.
Now if you’re a fan of radio – music, talk, sports or whatever – you can pick up a perfectly clear signal almost anywhere and play it easily through a device much handier than a computer!
Smartphones Play Radio:
In the US now, about half of the mobile phones are “smartphones” with internet capabilities. Every one of these phones can play “radio”. Choose from hundreds of thousands of stations, including PPR, and play away, wherever you are. (Do keep an eye on your data plan, if you’re not on a WiFi network!)
Cool Smartphone-as-Radio Tricks:
There are nifty devices that are something like clock-radios without the radio. Instead they are made to have your smartphone plugged in to play through the built-in amplifier and larger speakers. This makes the sound usable in a larger room and often also charges up your phone while it is plugged in!
There are also “docks” that are made to hook up your phone to a larger stereo system, and play the radio that way.
So; even if you’re in a radio blacked-out pocket in our little valley, you can still pick up Pawling Public Radio, or whatever is your favorite and play it to your hearts content!
