In Celtic mythology the month of May begins with the festival of Beltane, it marks the beginning of the second half of the Celtic year.
Twin fires are lit for livestock to pass through as a cleansing ritual, and the Maypole is placed in the center of the village.
The pole represents the masculine energy piercing the feminine Earth to give potency to the planting season.
Ribbons and flowers attached around the pole represent the womb and villagers dance around the pole as they wrap the ribbons of the Earth “womb” around the pole.
Festivals and dances in May are centered around engagements and marriages.
Young men in France who have previously been jilted have a fresh chance for love if they lie in field “asleep” and wait for a young woman to come plant a kiss on his cheek.
He is then said be a “betrothed of May”
The month of May is a wonderful time to ‘begin again’ to let the awakening of the goddess, mother earth awaken us to our potential to be co-creators in this magical opportunity we call life.
Wishing you all the promise of May’s budding and bursting of life.
With Love & Light,
