Freeport, ME
This past Saturday night I had the opportunity to do something I don’t normally do – I went to see a band in concert that I hadn’t ever heard of – for free! And I must say; I’m very glad I went outside my comfort zone to catch Big Head Todd and the Monsters in Freeport, Maine. They have a great sound stage set up inside the “courtyard” of the historic and huge LL Bean store. Every weekend, starting July 4th through September 1st, there is a free concert with all different genres performing. It was a lot of fun watching the multi-generational audience dancing and interacting with each other at this unique venue as well as the dogs barking and sniffing all the food vendors’ wares, the giant pine cone lights hanging from the huge pine trees surrounding us and the people in their parkas in the middle of July – sometimes I forget that I live in Maine now!
But the music! I was super impressed by Big Head Todd, aka Todd Park Mohr – and the entire band. They are labeled a rock/blues rock/alternative rock band and I think that I would agree with that description. As I watched Todd channel Jimi Hendrix and add a little John Mayer to his own style, I was very attentive. How had I not heard of this extraordinary band from Colorado? I couldn’t even remember the band’s name a week ago but I know them now for sure and have to say, I am a fan.
I couldn’t find a set list online for the show that I saw and since I didn’t really know any of their songs, it was hard for me to remember them all but Bittersweet (I sent a video of the song to an old friend who informed me that they were his favorite band!) and Please Don’t Tell Her/Let’s Get It On (yes! the Marvin Gaye tune!) were standouts. I also loved It’s Alright and Beautiful World. I will definitely be downloading their music to listen to their library of tunes. It’s always fun to broaden your horizons J Check this band out if they are playing anywhere in your neck of the woods – they are truly fabulous.
Here is the website/calendar for this summer’s events at LL Bean: https://www.llbean.com/summer/images/2018SITP_FULL_schedule_WEB_POSTMC.pdf?nav=F22tX-513045 . If you are vacationing here in Maine or just passing through and can catch a show, you will be glad you did! Oh, and did I mention the SHOPPING?? Yeah, Freeport is home of outlets galore! Perfect for back to school – for those who still need to do that…
Until next time, keep on rocking!!
