Gallery on the Green announces a special May exhibition of works by noted photographer Lynn Karlin. Raw Art: The Pedestal Series opens with a reception 5-7 pm on May 19th and will run through June 16th. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the art will go to benefit the Pawling Farmers Market.
Lynn Karlin’s new body of work is purely personal – it is about the obvious but often overlooked beauty of the harvest. “Weekly visits to the local farmers market took a new direction when I brought an amazingly beautiful purple cauliflower back to my studio and placed it on an old white pedestal by an east-facing window. The joy I got from that photograph started me on a quest to continue with my concept: honoring vegetables by literary placing them on a higher level. Two years later, I have collected more than a dozen various pedestals and have expanded my subjects to include fruit and flowers.”
Originally from New York, Karlin graduated from Pratt Institute. She has had an impressive list of employers and clients over her four-decade career shooting fashion, interiors and gardens. After her staff position as the first woman photographer for Women’s Wear Daily and W, she went on to assignments for The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, Coastal Living, Garden Design, Country Living, Design New England and England’s Gardens Illustrated, among other publications. Sole photographer of three books on gardens, her first, “Maine Farm, A Year of Country Life”, published by Random House in 1991, has become a classic.
