So Many Events…So Little Time
One of the joys of living in a town like Pawling is the richness of the cultural and community calendar. There are so many activities to choose from to participate in, that it is sometimes difficult to decide on any single one. On Saturday, December 8, along with family and friends, I attended the new exhibit of Alison Palmer’s pottery and graphics at Gallery on the Green….and it did not disappoint.
Amidst the soft, mellow guitar strumming of her husband, Steve Katz, (former guitarist for the legendary band Blood, Sweat, and Tears), we strolled among the whimsically creative offerings of this talented artist.
Currently transitioning away from her highly graphic, brightly colored pottery in shape and style reminiscent of the objects and animals they represent, Palmer is moving into a more organic style with obvious Mexican and South American influence. Her sketches for these pieces actually took shape during time spent in these more southern climes, and she will, indeed, be traveling there for a month, sketchbook in hand, again soon.
Her interesting hanging graphics are strong in color, style and subject. Her focus on the animal kingdom includes more than simply pictures of dog and cat, though they are a part of her menagerie. Her hanging zoo also includes frog and aardvark…and if the facial expressions don’t delight you, then the color and detail most assuredly will. Alison explained her creative process on a few of these pictures, which included sketching on paper bags, and using computer enhancement on the finished product. It is a very interesting mixture of raw and sophisticated artistry.
Although Alison’s studio is no longer situated in the Pawling community, her appealing style and whimsy should really be explored. Her work will be on view at Gallery on the Green at least through the holidays and possibly beyond, so do drop by.
Gallery on the Green is located at 7 Arch Street, in Pawling. Additional information about this artist, gallery hours, and upcoming events can be found at gotgpawling.com or call 845-855-5642.
