The Sherman Chamber Ensemble’s 30th Anniversary Season moves into high gear on July 6th and 7th with the first of its signature summer chamber music concerts. SCE co-founders Eliot Bailen (cello) and Susan Rotholz (flute) will be joined by long-time collaborators Jill Levy (violin) and Margaret Kampmeier (piano) in a program featuring the Schubert B flat Trio, Haydn’s Trio for flute, cello and piano, a trio for flute, violin and piano by Nino Rota, and Salut D’Amout by Edward Elgar.
“It is hard to believe it has been 30 years since our first performance on the stage of the Sherman Playhouse,” reports SCE Artistic Director Eliot Bailen. “To celebrate this occasion, we have been playing on the theme of the number 30. For one thing, we thought it would be interesting to look at what some famous composers were doing when they were 30.” The focus for this program is the Schubert Piano Trio, composed in 1827. Composer Robert Schumann summed up the qualities of this sparkling piece: “One glance at Schubert’s Trio (Op. 99) and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.”
Sherman Chamber Ensemble concerts are performed Friday evenings in the intimate and acoustically excellent St. Andrew’s Church on Main Street in Kent, CT. Saturday evening performances take place in the rustic charm of the lakeside Mauweehoo Clubhouse on Leach Hollow Road in Sherman, CT. All performances start at 8:00 PM and are followed by a reception offering light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the performers.
