Here’s a quick tip to help avoid having a bogged down computer; never install more than one antivirus program at a time into your computer.
It might seem counter to common sense, but it’s true. Antivirus programs, if they are working properly, will conflict with each other. And that, at the least, can cause your computer to noticeably slow down. At the worst, it can leave your computer unprotected.
The problem lies in the way that antivirus programs operate. A true “antivirus” is a very special kind of program that, from the point of view of another antivirus program, has behaviors that are very much like an actual virus. Because of the places that they go in your computer and the things that they do there, any antivirus program will look, to another antivirus, like it is a virus.
The antivirus programs will battle with each other inside your computer – sometimes quite literally. The result will be at least a slow-down in your computer and in some cases it could even grind it to a halt.
So; no matter how tempting it might be; never put more than one antivirus program in your computer at a time.
On the other hand; you should also always have one good antivirus installed. This includes Mac’s, by the way. No operating system is immune to malware these days.
